Members March Update from Chief Exec: 2016 Strategy, Your Contribution, Members Open Meeting

24 March 2016

The MMF Board met at the end of February and adopted a strategy (you can view this here) confirming what we stand for as an organisation and how we work with our membership and the industry to push for a fairer, more transparent music industry that operates in the interests of artists and their fans.

Following conversations with many of you over the last few months we identified various actions emerging from the strategy on MMF governance & membership, education, advocacy and our associate programme.  If you would like to contribute to the development of any of these please let me know.

Over the past month, the MMF has had some interesting dialogue with key parliamentary figures over both secondary ticketing and streaming.  A meeting with Sharon Hodgson MP revealed the alignment of ours and others’  strategies to tackle industrial touting in the sports, music and culture industries. The Government Review on secondary ticketing will be out on 26th May and will reveal Professor Waterson’s findings. Thank you if you were part of submitting evidence with us back in November.

Last night, we attended a parliamentary dinner with the UK music industry and MPs to debate the money flow in streaming. Prior to the event we sent each MP a copy of Dissecting the Digital Dollar and key questions were asked around transparency and creator’s remuneration. Along similar lines, we joined the panel at the last Cooking Vinyl Future of… event to talk about the future of economics in the streaming world

The debates around the questions posed in the Dissecting the Digital Dollar report continue with roundtables held in both London and Paris. We have an open meeting for all our members to debate the issues and contribute to Part 2 at Sonos on 11th April at 4pm. To RSVP please email fiona@themmf.net.

We also released two informative articles; one with in depth advice on getting your acts over to America and all the hurdles and pitfalls to look out for when it comes to tax, visa’s and shipping. The other listed 9 points to consider when looking at a streaming royalty statement in order to encourage informed public opinions on the economics of streaming.

We held a managers’ brunch at SXSW where Brian Message interviewed Kobalt founder Willard Ahdritz as well as an event at law firm Harbottle & Lewis with musicologist Peter Oxendale, enlightening managers, lawyers and labels on the legal complexities of sampling, joint authorship and copyright infringement.

We’ve also had meetings with; Vevo, BT Sport, Ticketfairy, the Competitions & Market Authority, Songkick, Crowdmix, Melody VR, AMP (a joint initiative between the Musicians Union, FAC and MMF) Key Productions, Google, Universal, Twickets, BIMM and DICE.

Finally, we’re still promoting a key survey produced by UK Music exploring the management community. If you haven’t filled it in, please take just 3 minutes to do so, it’s so important that we know more in order to properly represent you. http://bit.ly/UKManagersSurvey.

See you soon,

Annabella

Chief Executive
